No more Cramps, Bloating, and Migraines

Give thanks.

How many of you suffer from terrible cramps, bloating, weight gain, and/or migraines during your moon time? I too used to be a part of this camp. I would barricade myself in my room with lots of chocolate, peanut butter, and salty potato chips, watching sad and depressing movies about love gone wrong. My husband and my oldest son steered clear or they knew I’d let loose and they would have to deal with the Wrath of a Crazed Mama. So, I wallowed in my bloodiness, popping Pamprin, Midol, and Advil. Oh yeah, can’t forget that I was taking synthetic birth control pills back then to regulate my cycle, too. All the while, cursing God for cursing Eve and dying to get to Heaven just to smack her in the face for eating that daggone forbidden fruit, knowing she wasn’t even hungry. Yes, this was my sick and pathetic life. As much as I despise who I was back then, I honor those experiences as I continue to transform into a woman who embraces all things feminine. I no longer subscribe to biblical Bru Ha Ha written by men who could never understand or even value the very essence of womanhood. Now that I understand who I am and what I’m made of, I’m free to run, free to dance, free to worship, and do all that with no cramps, bloating, migraine, or attitude. My husband is probably clapping if he’s reading this.

What’s my secret? Well,  I have four. Clean eating, body movement, herbal infusions, and intimacy.

Clean Eating

Clean eating is one sure-fire way to either get rid of menstrual cramps or reduce their intensity. It’s a good idea to eliminate or extremely reduce your intake of foods that clog up the small intestines, make your body produce excessive mucous to digest, or cause bloating/inflammation. Examples of those foods include breads and sweets made with yeast or glutenous grains such as wheat, barley, or rye, meat (especially the sacred cow), processed foods, dairy products, table salt, and refined sugar (including high fructose corn syrup). I suggest eating out of your own kitchen as much as possible. When you prepare food at home, you know what ingredients are in it.

Your goal is to have two-three bowel movements a day with frequent urination (let it flow, mamas). It’s also key to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day.  So, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should be drinking 75 ounces or more of water each day. If half your weight in ounces is more than a gallon of water, just drink the gallon. For an extra boost of vitamin C and constipation relief, add lots of lemon juice to that water. Body Movement

In addition to keeping the digestive tract cleansed, it’s a good idea to get in at least 30 minutes of movement each day. I also suggest spontaneous dancing or walking. Belly dancing is great during moon time, too. Another great option is yoga full of twists and turns to help detox your body of all the yucky stuff that needs to come out. You can do all of this in the comfort of your own home. You Tube videos are free and there are some great options out there. The extra movement will help to boost your endorphin release which will help fight against that yucky feeling many of us have experienced during moon time.

Herbs

My next secret weapon is herbs. I drink herbal infusions almost every day. They are full of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay nourished and they have tons of medicinal properties. My favorite herbs for womb health are nettles, oat straw, and red raspberry leaf.

Intimacy

The last secret weapon is intimacy – personal intimacy and intimacy with your spouse or significant other. In fact, I probably should have listed this one first. Here’s the deal. I steal away from everything around me even if it’s just for fifteen minutes to honor my moon time to rest, meditation, and do personal rituals. I believe the power than emanates from a menstruating women enhances her ability to create. You’ll be amazed at what you can do. Once you’ve spent that time alone, don’t be afraid to engage in intimacy with your spouse or significant other. Let your lover massage you, kiss you, and love on you while you sit back and take it all in. I hear there’s magical power when couples join together on the fourth day. I dare you to try it.

Summary

To sum up my secrets for getting rid of cramps, bloating, and migraines, eat clean, move your body, drink herbal infusions, and get intimate. Pretty simple solutions that won’t cost you a whole bunch of money. In fact, you’ll save money because you won’t need the Midol, Advil, and Pamprin AND you won’t be eating processed or fast foods.
