While on this healing journey, I’ve encountered some wonderful folks who can’t enjoy life because they suffer from chronic migraines headaches. Now that I’ve changed my life, I rarely get headaches. When I do, a cup of hot peppermint tea knocks it out. Unfortunately, my headache remedy wouldn’t work for a migraine headache because it’s a different type of ailment. According to Dr. Melissa Conrad Stoppler, a contributing writer to http://www.medicinenet.com, migraine headaches are a form of vascular headaches. They are caused by enlargement of blood vessels that causes the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the large arteries of the brain. Enlargement of these blood vessels stretch the nerves that coil around them and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the arteries magnifies the pain.
Many folks have cabinets full of prescription drugs that tend to stop the pain and debilitate them in the process. They end up sleeping for hours and can’t perform normal life duties. I wanted to share a remedy from a friend and fellow healer (Nandi Asase Yaa, Owner and Head Brewmeister at Nandi’s Naturals). This remedy worked for me when I experienced unbearable migraines during my postpartum days. I also noticed that the blend was similar to the Master Cleanse blend. Each time I’ve went on that particular cleanse, I wondered why I didn’t experience a detox headache. Now I know. Here’s the recipe.
- 8 oz. of hot water
- 1-3 teaspoons cayenne pepper (depends on your spice level and potency of cayenne) – I’ve even used a drop or so of the hot cayenne pepper extract which is quite potent
- 2 teaspoons of lemon juice
- 1-3 teaspoons of grade B maple syrup or your choice of sweetener, if you find the cayenne a bit too spicy
Drink every 3-4 hours until relief
So, let’s talk about why it works. Headaches are caused by constricted blood vessels in the head.
- Cayenne pepper neutralizes blood pressure in the body
- Lemon juice pushes out the toxins, plus it’s full of vitamin C
- Maple syrup serves as a natural sweetener that enhances the taste, plus it’s full of zinc and magnese
This blend addresses the physical aspsects of migraines and headaches. How does it work? Cayenne pepper is full of capsaicin which when ingested, overwhelms your nerves and depletes them of substance B, a neurotransmitter that sends pain messages to your brain (Cayenne Pepper for Migraines, Livestrong).
Now, let’s talk about the spiritual aspects. Stress of any kind is a culprit. Make a list of the things that stress you out. Then pray and ask the creator to reveal those stressers you may not be aware of. For me, it was driving to work. I want to point out that all stressers can’t be removed right away. For instance, if you’re job is stressful, you may not be able to quit tomorrow. If your drive to work is stressful, unless you can quit your job, you can’t remove it. You can modify the experience, though. Instead of playing news or music that invokes excitement, play relaxing, zen music and pratice deep breathing at stop lights. Only you can determine the right modification for your lifestyle. Lastly, it’s important to maintain practices that keep you in a state of peace on a regular basis. I suggest yoga, tai chi (or qi gong), deep breathing, positive affirmations, meditation, and long walks in nature.
